Career Highlights: The longtime captain of his national team, Zhilyayev leads Kazakhstan back into the Olympic water polo competition after an absence in 2008. He's been a member of both previous Kazakh Olympic water polo teams (2000 and 2004). The team's best finish was ninth place at Sydney in 2000. The Kazakhs came in 11th at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Zhilyayev could have Team Kazakhstan poised for its best finish yet after leading it to an Asian Games title in November 2010, knocking off reigning champion China with a 7-6 victory in the final.
