As husband-and-wife teams go, Henrik and Magdalena Forsberg are something like baseball's Ray Knight and golf's Nancy Lopez. Henrik is a pretty good cross-country skier in his own right -- he won a World Cup 30-kilometer race i n 1991 -- but Magdalena is the real power of the duo. She finished on top of the 1997 World Cup biathlon standings and won two gold medals at the world championships. While Henrik is still searching for the form that gave him that lone win seven years ago , Magdalena is considered Sweden's best hope for a gold medal. Like Henrik, Magdalena was trained to be a cross-country skier. But after a poor showing at the Albertville Olympics, she began entertaining thoughts of a career move. "I was not in good shape and I skied bad," she says. "I watched the biathlon in Albertv ille and really liked it." Henrik, an avid hunter, taught her the basics of the gun and in 1993, she entered the Swedish national championships. Although she was still training for cross-country, a torn Achilles tendon that forced her out of the Lillehamm er Olympics convinced her to switch to biathlon for good. "I was tired of cross-country because I was doing it for so long," she says. "I felt like I was not improving and I wanted to do something new." Magdalena began full-time biathlon training in mid-1994 and by 1996, she'd won a bronze in the 7.5-kilometer sprint at the world championships. Although Magdena was slowed by another injury last year, her misfortunes pale compared to her husband's. "Henri k has had a lot more injuries than me," Magdalena says. "Because of that, he hasn't shown what he can do." She ain't kidding. Henrik missed both the 1989 and 1993 world championships due to viral infections; he missed eight weeks in 1996 due to a broken leg; he had arm surgery in July 1997. And while he would like to tap into some of the mojo his wife's got go ing into Nagano, Henrik is nothing if not realistic about his chances. While he'd love to recapture the feeling of his lone 1991 win -- a moment he terms the highlight of his career -- Henrik is nothing if not realistic. He hopes to use his vast experienc e to "ski more consistently and [earn] more top finishes." But if he can somehow manage to capture lightning in a bottle, maybe people will be more likely to compare the Forsbergs to tennis' Andre Agassi and TV's Brooke Shields.
