Despite the loutish behavior of the U.S. hockey team and the favorites' early ouster, the answer is, Yes, this was a dream of a tournament

    AUSTRIA 2, SLOVAKIA 2 ---------------------

Former National Hockey League players Zdeno Ciger and Robert Petrovicky scored second-period goals as Slovakia overcame a two-goal deficit and the absence of several star players to tie Austria, 2-2, in a Group A matchup.

Because every team in the NHL plays Saturday, the Slovakian squad was without high-scoring forwards Peter Bondra, Zigmund Palffy and Jozef Stumpel, as well as established professionals Robert Svehla, Miroslav Satan and Pavol Demitra.

Petrovicky, who has 126 games of NHL experience, including 44 with the St. Louis Blues last season, tied the score 2-2 with a power-play goal 13:52 into the second period. Ciger, who scored 82 goals over parts of six seasons with the New Jersey Devils and Edmonton Oilers, recorded an unassisted tally 6:35 into the period, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Claus Dalpiaz helped keep Austria in the game, stopping 36 shots, including all 17 he faced in the first period and all 13 in the third.

Dominic Lavoie opened the scoring on the power play 7:16 into the game, and Christian Perthaler gave Austria a 2-0 lead 3:30 into the second. The Austrians had three shots in each of the first two periods.

Slovakia's Igor Murin needed to stop only 10 shots to register the tie. Teammate Jan Varholik received a minor penalty and a 10-minute misconduct for checking an Austrian from behind in the second period.
