Posted: Sun February 8, 1998 at 11:06 a.m EST Canada 13, Japan 0 ------------------The Canadian women wasted no time in making their mark at the Olympic Games, as Danielle Goyette registered a hat trick and an assist to lead nine players with at least two points in a 13-0 dismantling of Japan , which was outshot, 64-3. The game was the first for both countries, as Nagano hosts the inaugural women's Olympic hockey medal tournament. Canada and the United States are considered gold medal favorites. Judy Diduck recorded two goals and an assist, Stacy Wilson totaled a goal and three assists and Hayley Wickenheiser and Cassie Campbell each added a goal and two assists for Canada . Goyette opened the scoring 5:46 into the contest and watched her team gain a 3-0 advantage after one period on goals by Geraldine Heaney and Diduck. The Canadians outshot Japan 19-0 in the first. Goyette again opened the scoring in the second period with 15:37 to play and assisted on Wilson's marker with 4:17 left in the second, as Canada took a 7-0 lead. Goyette completed the hat trick on Canada 's 12th goal with 3:39 left in the game. Heaney, Therese Brisson, Becky Kellar and France St. Louis each recorded a goal and an assist for Canada . Canadian goaltenders Lesley Reddon and Manon Rheaume split time, with Reddon facing one shot and Rheaume two. Canada outshot Japan 25-1 in the second period and 20-2 in the third. The Canadian team features a pair of players with National Hockey League roots. Wickenheiser is a cousin of former NHL number one draft choice Doug Wickenheiser, and Diduck is the sister of NHL veteran Gerald Diduck, a Phoenix Coyotes defenseman.
