    United States 7, Sweden 1 -------------------------

    Karyn Bye scored on the power play and shorthanded in a four-goal second period as the United States broke open a tight game en route to a dominating 7-1 victory over Sweden .

    Sue Merz added a goal and two assists for the U.S. (2-0), which outshot the winless Swedes, 47-3.

    The United States , co-gold medal favorites with Canada , had a 13-1 advantage in shots in the first period but came away with a 1-1 tie on the scoreboard. Pia Morelius's power-play goal on Sweden 's only shot of the period made it 1-0 with 9:58 to go.

    Laurie Baker tied it just over six minutes later before the Americans pulled away. Bye's power-play goal with 7:21 to go in the second period broke the deadlock. Katie King made it 3-1 with 5:34 remaining and Merz scored just under two minutes later. Teammate Chris Bailey was serving an interference penalty when Bye scored again as the U.S. erupted for four goals in six minutes.

    Gretchen Ulion added a power-play goal late in the third period and Shelley Looney capped the scoring 62 seconds later with the Americans' second shorthanded tally.

    The United States , which plays Finland on Wednesday (Tuesday night in the U.S.), has outshot its first two opponents, 78-13.

    Annica Ahlen stopped 40 shots for Sweden (0-2), which was beaten by Finland on Sunday, 6-0.
