    Germany 2, France 0 -------------------

Olaf Kolzig of the Washington Capitals stopped all 25 shots he faced and defenseman Uwe Krupp of the Colorado Avalance registered an assist to lead Germany to a 2-0 victory over France in a preliminary-round game in Nagano.

Mark Mackay and Peter Draisaitl scored goals for Germany , which completed the opening round with a 2-1-0 record but failed to advance to the championship round.

Kolzig and Krupp, two of 120 National Hockey League players who are competing in Nagano, remained with their NHL teams through Saturday and missed Germany 's first two games, including Monday's 8-2 loss to Belarus . They had an immediate impact in their first game with the national team, but Belarus had clinched the Group B title before Kolzig and Krupp stepped on the ice.

Germany outplayed France in the first period, but the game remained scoreless thanks to the performance of French goaltender Francois Gravel, who made 13 saves in the period.

Mackay opened the scoring at 7:46 of the second period and it was the only goal Kolzig would need. France picked up the offense after the first period, but Kolzig turned aside 21 shots in the final two periods to post the shutout.

Krupp sprung Draisaitl on a breakaway for an insurance goal at the 18:06 mark of the final period.
