    Japan 4, Austria 3 (SHOOTOUT) -----------------------------

Shin Yahata scored in the eighth shootout round, giving Japan its first Olympic hockey victory in 22 years, 4-3 over winless Austria in the 13th-place game.

Akihito Sugisawa and Matthew Kabayama also scored for Japan in the shootout, which was dominated by goaltenders Reinhard Divis and Dusty Imoo. Divis stopped five straight Japanese attempts before Kabayama beat him in the sixth round.

But Richard Nasheim also scored in the sixth round for Austria, prolonging the shootout. Imoo denied Simon Wheeldon, who had a brief NHL career with the New York Rangers, before Yahata scored on a backhander to give Japan its first Olympic hockey win since Innsbruck in 1976.

Dominic Lavoie, who spent six years in the NHL with St. Louis, Ottawa, Boston and Los Angeles, scored twice, including a power-play goal 3:04 into the third period that gave Austria a 3-2 lead. But Tsutsumi Otomo answered at 6:35 to send the game to overtime.

Gerald Ressman had the other goal for the Austrians, who went 0-2-2 in round-robin competition.

Yahata and Sugisawa had power-play goals for Japan, which was 1-2-1.
