    Wei Guo recorded a hat trick and Xiuqing Yang added a goal and an assist as China scored its first goals of the tournament and defeated hapless Japan, 6-1, in women's hockey.

    Yang scored China's first goal in Nagano, handing her team a 1-0 lead with 7:39 left in the second period. She then set up Guo's first marker 14 seconds later. Seventy seconds later, Lan Zhang's goal gave China a 3-0 advantage after two periods.

    Guo scored her second goal of the tournament, on the power play, 6:31 into the third, giving China a 4-1 lead and capped the scoring with 4:41 to play. She became the third woman in the tournament to register a hat trick, joining Canada 's Danielle Goyette and Finland 's Kirsi Haenninen.

    China had been outscored, 7-0, in losing its first two games of the tournament before exploding against a Japanese team which has been outscored, 30-2. Japan is 0-3 after being outshot 157-19 in its three games.

    Hingmei Liu added two assists for China, which held a 44-7 shot advantage against Japan, including a 23-0 bulge in the second period. China was outshot 71-18 in its first two games.

    Masako Sato cut the deficit to 3-1 with a power-play goal 2:25 into the third period. Both of Japan's goals in Nagano have come with the man advantage.
