    Germany 4, Slovakia 2 ---------------------

    Jan Benda scored twice in a three-goal third period and Olaf Kolzig stopped 31 shots as Germany captured ninth place in men's hockey at the Winter Olympics in Nagano with a 4-2 victory over Slovakia.

    Slovakia held a 2-1 lead entering the final period before Benda's second goal of the Olympics at the 2:51 mark tied the game.

    Benda struck again just over four minutes later, scoring with 13:01 remaining to give the Germans the lead for good. Mirko Ludemann's first goal at the 9:58 mark provided Germany with an insurance goal.

    Slovakia, which finished a disappointing 10th, took a 1-0 lead 17:51 into the opening period on Jozef Dano's first goal. But Kolzig, who plays for the National Hockey League's Washington Capitals, kept Germany in the game with 11 saves in the period.

    Germany tied the scored just 1:30 into the second period on Petr Draisaitl's power-play goal. But Slovakia regained the lead with 1:58 to go in the second on Jan Pardavy's first goal.

    Kolzig was even better in the second period with 16 saves. He was less busy in the final period, stopping all four shots he faced.

    Petr Bondra of the Capitals, one of two NHL players to dress for Slovakia, drew a game misconduct penalty with 4:10 to play after fighting Germany's Erich Goldmann.

    Slovakia again played without five NHL stars who were unable to dress due to a lack of roster spots. The group included Zigmund Palffy of the New York Islanders and Jozef Stumpel of the Los Angeles Kings.
