Despite the loutish behavior of the U.S. hockey team and the favorites' early ouster, the answer is, Yes, this was a dream of a tournament

    Russia 2, Czech Republic 1 --------------------------

Valeri Bure and Alexei Zhamnov scored third-period goals 10 seconds apart as Russia rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in a matchup of the top two teams in Group D.

Mikhail Shtalenkov made 22 saves for Russia (3-0), which clinched the top seed in Group D by rallying to victory for the second time in two nights. The Russians, who came from two-goals down Sunday to defeat Finland , avoided a meeting with the United States in the quarterfinals and will take on Belarus instead.

Dominik Hasek turned aside 29 shots and Robert Reichel tallied the lone goal for the Czech Republic (2-1), which faces the U.S. in the quarterfinals.

After a scoreless first period in which Russia held a 14-8 advantage in shots, Reichel scored on the power play at 11:53 of the second. He took a high shot from the slot, which appeared to deflect off teammate Petr Svoboda and past Shtalenkov.

Russia knotted the game 3:27 into the second when Bure streaked down the left side and let loose a slap shot from 40 feet out that beat Hasek to the stick side.

Seconds later, Zhamnov won a faceoff, came out on a breakaway, fell down and, while lying on the ice, chopped the puck high over Hasek's glove. The goals were the first of the tournament for both Bure and Zhamnov.

Jaromir Jagr, who left the game midway through the first period with an apparent shoulder injury, had the best chance for the Czech Republic to knot the game. He had a breakaway with four minutes remaining but Shtalenkov came out and deflected the puck with his right pad.

The Czechs were 1-for-3 on the power play while Russia went 0-for-7.
