Mary Lou Retton became America's sweetheart with her perfect 10 to win the gymnastics all-around competition. She became the first American woman to win an individual Olympic gymnastics medal of any kind. Romania's Ecaterina Szabo led the competition by .05 points going into the last rotation; her 9.90 on bars meant Retton needed a 9.95 just to tie. Instead, her vault was perfect and she walked away with the gold.
