October 3, 1988
| In perhaps the biggest scandal in Olympic history, Canada's Ben Johnson ran a world-record 9.79 in the 100 meters, besting the U.S.'s Carl Lewis by .13 seconds. But a day later, finally confirming months of rumors, Johnson tested positive for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid. The cover story was co-written by William Oscar Johnson and Kenny Moore: "After a night of deliberation, the IOC executive board found Johnson guilty of violating its rules against using performance-enhancing drugs. The IOC declared Johnson's race null, stripped him of his gold medal and awarded it to Lewis." |
