Olympic brochure omits Salt Lake City introduction

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A million copies of a 2002 Winter Olympic brochure will not include a planned section featuring Salt Lake City entertainment and tourism highlights.

The brochure mock-up submitted to the Salt Lake Organizing Committee included the information, but Rick Davis, head of the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau, which proposed the brochure, said he did not realize "the legal ramifications of doing anything with the Olympic logo."

Davis said bureau attorneys told him non-Olympic information should be deleted - including a dozen paragraphs at the beginning of the brochure about Salt Lake City.

"There could have been a great deal more promotional material in there, but because it had the Olympic rings and logo, it could only refer to different Olympic venues," Davis said.

SLOC spokeswoman Shelley Thomas said organizing committee attorneys did not review the brochure, but said the changes were not a legal issue. "There isn't an edict or a law that says we can't talk about other stuff. We just never have," she said. "We're just supposed to talk about the Olympics."

So the finished product rolled out Tuesday omitted references to area attractions, ranging from Temple Square, to the city's bars and some "extremely lusty, feisty entertainment offerings."

Now the brochure includes a single paragraph calling Salt Lake City "one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States."

Davis offered earlier this year to print 1 million copies of the brochure for Olympic organizers at a cost of about $150,000. The pamphlet was to be used by the visitors bureau and others agencies - including Olympic organizers - to respond to inquires about the 2002 Winter Games.

The brochure still includes a map pinpointing every venue site, as well as names, addresses, phone numbers and web sites for agencies that can provide additional information.
