D'Alema: Best interests of the nation Italy's new premier upholds Turin's bid for 2006 GamesPosted: Monday November 09, 1998 04:56 PM
ROME (AP) -- Italy's new premier assured the Turin Olympic Committee on Monday that the government still supports the northern city's bid for the 2006 games. The financial, political and diplomatic support for Turin's candidacy was in the best interests of the entire nation, Premier Massimo D'Alema said. D'Alema, who took office last month, is continuing the support offered by the old premier, Romano Prodi. Besides Turin, other contenders include Sion, Switzerland; Zakopane, Poland; Helsinki, Finland; Klagenfurt, Austria; and Slovakia's High Tatras Mountains. The 2006 host city will be selected by the IOC on June 19, 1999, at its session in Seoul, South Korea. Sion is considered the early favorite.
