SOCOG plans to sell Olympic blueprint Posted: Wednesday March 03, 1999 01:03 PM
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Sydney Olympic organizers may sell information about how to host a games to other cities considering bidding for major events. SOCOG chief executive officer Sandy Hollway said SOCOG was collating a blueprint of "intellectual property" to sell to other countries. Hollway said that when SOCOG began planning for the 2000 Olympics it had no guide on how to run the games, despite input from the organizing committees of the Atlanta and Barcelona Olympics and the IOC. "But we have developed systematic, documented information that we wish to make available," Hollway said. "If I was a private consultant I would be charging a fortune for this. I do not wish to charge cities a fortune but I'm a very poor man and I would like some [recompense] for this intellectual property." He said if a city purchased the SOCOG blueprint, the information would be followed up with seminars and contacts with representatives from related government agencies. Sydney Lord Mayor Frank Sartor said a substantial amount of work had been put in to preparing the blueprint for major events, work which would potentially save future organizers about 12 months of effort. SOCOG is more than $124 million short of its marketing target for the games.
