WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Capsules of Tuesday's events at the Pan American Games:
SWIMMINGThe United States managed one gold medal in five events, the men winning the 800-meter relay. Other U.S. medalists were Don Donnelly of Sarasota, Fla.; Talor Bendel of Fort Mitchell, Ky.; Annemieke McReynolds of Wildwood, Ga., and Katie Yevak of Emporia, Kan. Donnelly won the silver in the men's 400 individual medley, finishing in 4:17.86. Canada's Curtis Myden won the gold in 4:12.52 and Owen von Ritcher of Canada won the bronze. Venezuela's Francisco Sanchez won men's 100 butterfly. Bendel took the bronze in the women's 200 freestyle in 2:03.18. Jessica Deglau of Canada won the race in 2:00.65 and Jamaica's Janelle Atkinson was second in 2:01.11. McReynolds won the silver in the women's 200 breaststroke in 2:30.53 and Yevak took the bronze in 2:32.85. Canada's Lauren van Ooesten won in 2:30.36.
SOFTBALLDanielle Henderson pitched her second perfect game of the Pan Ams as the powerful U.S. women's team beat the Bahamas 12-0, a game stopped after five innings by the mercy rule. Henderson, also perfect in a win over Colombia, struck out 13 of the 15 batters she faced. One batter grounded out and the other popped out. In another women's game, it was Colombia 1, the Netherlands Antilles 0. Canada knocked the U.S. men from the unbeaten ranks with a 3-0 victory. The Canadians, who got a home run from Kevin Broboskie, are 5-0, while the Americans are 4-1. Also, Cuba beat the Dominican Republic 6-3.
TENNISCecil Mamiit and Paul Goldstein, the top two seeds, moved into the semifinals. Mamiit, of Los Angeles, beat Federico Dondo of Uruguay 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Goldstein, from Rockville, Md., was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Daniel Melo of Brazil. The third U.S. man, Bob Bryan of Camarillo, Calif., lost to 17-year-old David Nalbandian of Argentina 7-5, 6-4. Brazil's Paulo Taicher defeated Mexico's Oscar Ortiz 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in the other quarterfinal. Nicole Arendt of Gainesville, Fla., and Lilia Osterloh of Canal Winchester, Ohio, were eliminated from medal contention in women's doubles by a quarterfinal loss. Argentina's Mariana Diaz-Oliva and Clarissa Fernandez beat the American duo 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Arendt played despite tearing her left calf muscle on Sunday.
BEACH VOLLEYBALLMarsha Miller and Jenny Pavley reached their first championship match together when they beat a team from Mexico 15-10. The duo won three straight matches after losing its first two.
BOWLINGA comeback from more than 250 pins down lifted the U.S. women into first place after two days of competition with 9,221 pins. Mexico is 29 pins back. Janette Piesczynski of Cheektowaga, N.Y., leads the individual scoring with a 199 average through 12 games.
FENCINGZaddick Longenbach of New York was awarded one of the two bronze medals in men's foil after losing to Cuba's Elvis Gregory 15-11 in the semifinals. Ronaldo Tucker of Cuba beat Gregory 15-10 for the gold. Carlos Rodriguez of Venezuela won the other bronze. In women's epee, Nhi Lan Le of Atlanta became a co-bronze medalist after a 15-12 semifinal loss to Cuba's Tamara Estery Almeida. Miraida Garcia Soto of Cuba beat Estery Almeida 15-14 for the gold medal. Argentina's Elida Augera won the other bronze.
WEIGHTLIFTINGTara Nott of Stilwell, Kan., won the gold medal in the women's 48-kilogram division with lifts totaling 177.5 kilograms (391 pounds). Colombia's Leydi Zuluaga won the silver and Quillermina Candelario of the Dominican Republic took the bronze.
The United States was shut out in the men's 56-kilogram
division. Sergio Alvaraz of Cuba won the gold, Colombia's Nelson
Castro the silver and Colombia's Juan Fernandez Garzon the bronze.
