Jenny Thompson Practice makes perfect: Jenny Thompson's typical daily schedule includes more than six hours of training. Adam Pretty/Allsport

Jenny Thompson made headlines at the 1999 Pan Pacific Championships when she broke the 18-year-old world record in the 100-meter butterfly. A world record-holder in four events, Thompson has won five Olympic gold medals and is tied with Bonnie Blair for most Olympic gold medals by an American woman. The 26-year-old is now training for the 2000 Olympic Games. Check out Thompson's diary every month on CNNSI.com.

October, 6, 1999
Menlo Park, California

Well, it's October 6, 1999, and I'm three weeks into the "big push" for the Olympics next summer. After four very relaxing weeks off after the Pan Pacific Games in August, I'm back in the saddle of intense training.

An average day this month:
6:30-8:30 a.m. -- swim practice (around 6500 meters)
9:15-10:15 a.m. -- weights or pilates, depending on the day
Noon -- lunch (sometimes a nap!)
2:15-3:30 p.m. -- circuit training and spinning class
3:30-5:30 p.m. -- afternoon swim practice (around 6500 meters)
after that -- dinner and do something enjoyable like read, go to the movies, hang out in San Francisco, etc.

It has been difficult these past three weeks trying to get in shape and all. I think the older you are the harder it is to get back in shape if you happen to get out of it! I've been REALLY sore and it's a little hard to get out of bed sometimes (physically and mentally), but then I remember my goals and it's a lot easier.

What is the goal you ask? Nothing less than an Olympic Gold in the 100 fly and a new world record.

I'm excited about the upcoming swim meet schedule. I'll be attending the U.S. World Cup in College Park, Md., in November, the U.S. Open in San Antonio in December. I'll also be training at the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs in part of December.

That's all for now! Until next time, keep smiling.

-- Jenny
