Michele Smith Mailbag

Posted: Thursday October 07, 1999 06:37 PM

Michele Smith has one gold medal, but she's heading to the Sydney Olympic Games looking for No. 2. The 5-foot-10 pitcher/designated hitter was part of the 1996 U.S. team that won the first Olympic gold medal in softball. She played in all nine games, posting an ERA of 1.50.

Smith, who speaks fluent Japanese, is currently playing professionally in Japan in a league sponsored by major companies. But she remains one of softball's biggest names in the United States, with a signature ball, bat and glove series for girls.
