LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) -- Lamine Diack, the new president of the International Amateur Athletic Federation, was elected Saturday as a member of the International Olympic Committee.
Diack, of Senegal, was appointed as interim president of the world athletics body after the death last month of Italy's Primo Nebiolo, who ran the IAAF for 18 years. Nebiolo was also an influential figure on the IOC since 1992.
Diack has been confirmed as president of the IAAF until its next congress in 2001.
"It is of the highest importance that the new president of this association be one of us," IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch said as he proposed Diack's membership to the opening session of the IOC assembly.
The IOC delegates approved Diack's membership by acclamation. His appointment brings the total IOC membership to 103.
Nebiolo was also president of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations, a body which he turned into a force in commercial negotiations with the IOC. A successor to that post hasn't been chosen yet.
Earlier, the IOC's most recent recruit, FIFA president Sepp Blatter, was sworn in as a member.
"I am very proud," the head of world soccer's governing body told delegates after taking the oath.
The action came at the start of an IOC session where members will vote on a series of reforms prompted by the Salt Lake City bribery scandal.
