World champion tests positive
Posted: Wednesday December 15, 1999 11:09 AM
BUCHAREST (Reuters) -- Romanian gold medallist Razvan
Ilie tested positive for an anabolic steroid at last month's
world championships where he broke the world snatch record, the
Romanian Weightlifting Federation (FRH) said on Wednesday.
"Ilie tested positive with methandienone and he was
automatically banned," FRH president and national team coach
Nicu Vlad told Reuters. "If a second sample also tests
positive, Ilie will have to return the gold he got in Greece."
Ilie, 23, was world snatch champion in the men's 77-kg
category in Athens. It is the second time he has tested positive
after a previous positive test in 1997.
