Yekaterina Khodotovich, Belarus

Destination:
2000 Sydney Olympics rowing competition
Traveling from:
Potsdam, Germany
Personal:
Age: 27
Height: 5'11"
In 1998, Yekaterina (Katya) Karsten, née Khodotovich, took her gold medals and top-of-the-world status as a single sculler and disappeared from the rowing scene to get married and have a baby. It didn't take long, however, after she rejoined the circuit to reestablish herself. In 1999 she won the final event in the World Cup series and recaptured her world title.
Achievements:
1999 World Championships, 1st, single sculls
1997 World Championships, 1st, single sculls
1997 World Cup, overall champion, single sculls
1996 Olympic Games, gold, single sculls
1995 World Championships, 7th, single sculls
1994 World Championships, 5th, double sculls
1993 World Championships, 7th, double sculls
1992 Olympic Games, bronze, quadruple sculls
1991 World Championships, 3rd, double sculls
1990 Junior World Championships, 1st, single sculls
Currently:
Khodotovich's chief rival for the gold in Sydney will be Irina Fedotova of Russia. After Khodotovich departed the circuit in 1998 to have a baby (Alexandra was born 5/12/98), Fedotova stepped in and did what Katya had done the year before -- win all three World Cup events as well as the World Championships. Fedotova had also won the first two World Cup events in 1999 before Khodotovich won the final event and the Worlds.
Did you know?
Khodotovich is coached by Anatoly Kvatkowski, who lives in Minsk, Belarus. Once a month, he drives 12 hours to Potsdam to work with Katya.
