Michellie Jones, Australia

Destination:
Donald Miralle/Allsport
2000 Sydney Olympics triathlon competition
Traveling from:
Carlsbad, Calif.
Personal:
Age: 30
Height: 5'10"
It didn't take long for Jones (whose first name is pronounced mih-KEE-lee) to rise above the crowd. Her first attempt at a multi-sport event was in 1988. In 1991, she finished third at the world championships. In 1992 and 1993, she won back-to-back world titles. Since then, she has been remarkably consistent -- she has never finished lower than fourth in six world championship appearances. She finished 1998 and 1999 atop the International Triathlon Union world rankings. Jones, who grew up in New South Wales and will compete under the Australian flag, moved to the U.S. in 1996.
Achievements:
2000 Won both World Cup triathlons in which she has competed (through April 16)
1999 Placed fourth at world championships
1999 Won two of six World Cup triathlons in which she competed
1999 Escape From Alcatraz, 1st
1998 Goodwill Games, 2nd
1998 World championships, 2nd
1998 Escape From Alcatraz, 1st
1998 Won three of seven World Cup triathlons in which she competed
1997 World championships, 3rd
1997 Escape From Alcatraz, 1st
1997 Won one of two World Cup triathlons in which she competed
1994-96 Did not compete in World championships
1993 World championships, 1st
1992 World championships, 1st
1991 World championships, 3rd
Currently:
Triathlon makes its Olympic debut in Sydney. By winning the Sydney Triathlon on April 16, a World Cup event, Jones qualified for the Australian team. Jones's toughest competitors in Sydney will most likely be her teammates: the top five finishers at the 1999 World Championships were all Aussies.
