Simona Amanar

Destination:
David E. Klutho
2000 Sydney Olympics gymnastics competition
Traveling from:
Deva, Romania
Personal:
Age: 20
Amanar is coming off a strong showing at the world championships, where she led Romania to the team title and earned two individual silver medals (in vault and floor exercise). Her silver in the vault was a bit of a letdown, as the event is her specialty; she won it at both the 1996 Olympics and 1997 world champions.
Achievements:
1999 World championships, team, 1st; vault and floor exercise, 2nd
1998 World Cup, vault and floor exercise, 1st
1998 European championships, team, 1st; all-around and vault, 2nd; beam
1997 World championships, team and vault, 1st; all-around, 2nd
1996 Olympic Games, vault, 1st; floor, 2nd; all-around and team, 3rd
1996 World championships, vault, 2nd
1996 European championships, vault and team, 1st; all-around, 4th; beam, 5th; floor, 7th
1995 World championships, team and vault, 1st; all-around, 4th; floor, 6th
1994 European championships, team, 1st
Currently:
With the help of Romanian coach Octavian Belu (who has reportedly hinted that the only reason he is staying with the team is his belief in Amanar's chances at the Olympics), Amanar will be looking for her first-ever all-around gold at a major competition in Sydney. Because of a mishap on the uneven bars, Amanar finished a disastrous 14th in the all-around at the '99 world championships. Had she scored the average of her other scores in place of that result, she would have been the overall champion.
