Merlene Ottey Merlene Ottey: "I think if (the IAAF) really want to hurt me they could wait until the 100 meters is finished." Gray Mortimore/Allsport

LONDON (Reuters) -- Merlene Ottey has reaffirmed her determination to compete in this year's Sydney Olympics despite a positive test for the anabolic steroid nandrolone last year.

"I am going to keep on training and hoping I will have the opportunity to be in Sydney," Ottey said in a television interview on Wednesday.

"I have decided that this year will be my last year and hopefully I will get the chance to have this dream come true to run in Sydney and then retire."

The former world 200 meters champion, who turns 40 in six days, tested positive before the Seville world championships last August.

She denied taking any banned substances but last February the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) decided to send her case to arbitration. The IAAF has yet to set a date for the hearing.

"It depends what they do," Ottey said. "I think if they really want to hurt me they could wait until the [Olympic] 100 meters is finished

"But they could give me a date as early as next week. I hoping I will get one soon and my attorney is pushing for an early date."
