Robinson got his start on the water as a surf-lifesaver, which involves a combination of running, swimming and paddling. In 1988, he was introduced to kayaking. A year later, he won the state and national junior K1 1,000-meter titles. He has medaled in two Olympics, including a gold in Barcelona in 1992.

Robinson appeared to lock up the only Olympic K1 1,000-meter spot for Australia by defeating rival Nathan Baggaley for the second time in a unique match race.
Robinson, who placed second to Baggeley at the Australian Championships earlier this year, complained at that event that weeds stuck to the bottom of his kayak and impeded his performance.
