Zimmermann, the top-ranked female American fencer in the foil, took up the sport at the age of 6 because her older sister, Felicia, now 24, was fencing. Iris has been competing about once a month so far this year. Her top finish was a bronze medal in April in Como, Italy. At that event, she defeated her sister to make it into the final round of four (Felicia finished 8th). Iris is a freshman at Stanford University.
They Said It?
"Fencing is my life. Fencing has made me who I am today. It has shaped my very existence. Without fencing I feel like I am without a family, sort of lost. It's everything about fencing and everything that I do for fencing that make up who I am, how I think. It most definitely rules my life."
--Iris Zimmermann
