Edwards still looking for first gold medal
Jonathan Edwards, who won a silver medal at the 1996 Olympics, will be looking for his first gold in September. The triple jumper is one of Britain's greatest hopes for a medal at the 2000 Games in Sydney. After setting the world record of 18.29 meters at the world championships in 1995, he was the favorite for gold at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, but lost out in agonizing fashion. Edwards, whose struggles to maintain excellence are chronicled in a new book called "A Time to Jump," is particularly pleased with his preparations for this summer's Olympics. "I am very, very happy," Edwards said. "My training has gone outstandingly, especially the last six to eight weeks. I have been in Florida, which is where I was in 1996 and 1985. I feel very content with my physical condition and mentally really upbeat, which after the disappointment of Seville last year is a bit of a miracle in itself, so I am feeling very, very positive." Now 34 years old, Edwards will have his first meet of the year in Bergen, Norway on June 27 and then will compete in Rome at the European Cup.
