Sun Wen, China

Destination:
John W. McDonough
2000 Sydney Olympics soccer competition
Traveling from:
Shanghai, China
Personal:
Age: 27
Height: 5'4"
Sun Wen, a forward, is China's captain. Her blend of creative playmaking and technical ability makes her a nightmare to defend. During the Women's World Cup in 1999, U.S. coach Tony DiCicco said that Sun Wen's play had elevated dramatically since the 1996 Olympics -- where the U.S. defeated China 2-1 for the gold medal -- she went from an excellent player to one of the best in the world. Sun was the top scorer at the '99 Women's Cup (seven goals) and was designated the outstanding player of the tournament.
Achievements:
1999 Women's World Cup, 2nd
1999 Chinese Women's Super Cup with Shanghai team, 1st
1998 Goodwill Games, 2nd
1998 Asian Games, 1st
1996 Olympics, 2nd
1995 Women's World Cup, 4th
1994 World Goodwill Games, champion
1993 World Championships, champion
1992 Olympic Games, champion
1991 Women's World Cup, 5th
Currently:
Wen has consistently been a thorn in the side of the U.S. team. She scored her team's first goal in China's 2-1, March 1999 victory, which ended the U.S.'s 50-game domestic unbeaten streak. Then, at the Pacific Cup this past May, Sun converted a penalty kick in the 86th minute to again help China beat the U.S. 1-0 in the first round of the round-robin tournament. She also scored in China's 2-1 loss to the U.S. in the '96 Olympic final.
They Said It?
"She is very, very good. She's a very smart player. She can run at our defense and cause us problems. She can make runs off the ball that are tactically at a high level so that she runs in behind us or makes diagonal runs. She does it all, and always seems to find a seam in the boxes, -- and her teammates find her there. She's a very sophisticated player."
--U.S. defender Carla Overbeck, during the 1999 World Cup tournament, on Wen
