Cathy Freeman, the two-time reigning 400-meter world champion, is Australia's best chance for gold on the track at the 2000 Games in Sydney.

She's gone unbeaten in the last two seasons and has the fastest time in the world this year at 39.5 seconds. If she can improve on her silver medal showing at the 1996 Games, Freeman will become the first Australian Aborigine in history to win Olympic gold.

"You know, an Olympic gold would be really great," Freeman said. "It would make me cry if I won a gold medal in Sydney. People have really embraced me and taken me into their hearts and into their minds. And I think people understand me and understand that I love to run, and I'm a very proud athlete and, you know, fairly honest.

Despite being somewhat controversial over the past year, Freeman remains hugely popular in Australia. Yet, in order to escape the glare in her home country, she has chosen to get ready for the Olympics in London, a place Freeman believes is an ideal setting for her to prepare for the Sydney Games.
