Senior swam and ran cross-country competitively before starting modern
pentathlon (in which athletes swim, run, horseback ride, fence and shoot). His
first major international success came in 1999, when as a member of the U.S.
Army Team, he won the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World
Championship team event. The same year, he also won the first Biathel World
Championship (run-swim-run), an event created to test and attract potential
pentathlon talent.

Senior entered the 2000 World Championships, held in June, ranked No. 1 one in
the world. It was his first senior world championships, and while he helped the
U.S. men to two gold medals (relay and team), he finished a disappointing 15th
in individual competition. Also in 2000, he has had first-, third- and
fourth-place finishes at World Cup
events.
