In Sydney, Devers is looking for her first gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles.
She captured back-to-back golds in the 100-meter dash at the 1992 and '96 Games,
but finished out of the medals both times in the hurdles (remember her fall in
'92, when she tripped over the last hurdle and finished fifth?). She won't be
able to win her third 100-meter dash title since she failed to qualify for
Sydney in that event, but Devers is still the favorite in the hurdles. Her
re-emergence as a dominant force is somewhat surprising, because she did not
practice or compete in the hurdles between the fall of 1996 and spring of 1999.

At the U.S. Olympic Trials in July, Devers lowered her American record in the
100-meter hurdles to 12.33 seconds. Through August 15, she held the top four
times in that event this year, and six of the top 10
times.
