Nearly 2 million tickets still unsold
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Nearly 2 million tickets remain for sale at the Sydney Olympics, just three weeks before the start of the games. As of Wednesday, there were 1.963 million tickets to be sold. Of that total, nearly a quarter -- 496,400 tickets -- were for early round soccer matches in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Canberra. The rest were for events at Olympic venues around Sydney. Tickets are available for gold-medal sessions in most sports, and about 8,000 tickets for the closing ceremony remain for sale. The opening ceremony and all swimming events are sold out. Four track and field sessions are sellouts, as are some basketball games and finals in baseball, softball, tennis, field hockey and rowing. The seats remaining include 75,000 Super Tickets that had been set aside for corporate bigwigs. That scheme failed, and those tickets were put back on sale at list price to all fans this week. An Olympics-record 9 million tickets were issued for these games, which run Sept. 15 to Oct. 1. There has never been a sellout of all events at an Olympics.
