Feeling better with each passing day
Debbie Ferguson won a silver medal at the 1996 Olympics as part of the Bahamas' 400-meter relay team. She enjoyed a record-setting collegiate career at the University of Georgia where she was a 19-time All-American, a four-time NCAA champion and broke Gwen Torrence's school records in the 100 and 200 meters. Debbie is now training for Sydney, where she plans to compete in the 400 relay, 100 and 200 meters. Ferguson will periodically check from Sydney on CNNSI.com.
Sydney, Australia
What have you done since you arrived in Australia?
Well, wouldn't you know it. The first day I arrived in Australia I got sick. I had a sinus infection that I caught on the flight and a fever that was out of this world. As If that wasn't enough I had aches and pains all over my body. How frustrating! I couldn't train. I felt as though all my dreams would come to an end -- but only for a split second. (Always think positive.) That's how awful I was feeling. The doctor prescribed some antibiotics and the coaches prescribed vitamin C. Now I am on the way to recovery. The first day at practice after my sickness, I was drained and felt as though I didn't even know how to run. Well, I promise not to panic. I am presently getting and feeling better with each passing day.
What were your first impressions of Australia?
Australia is a beautiful place. However, my first impression of Sydney was one of despair. The weather at the time was very cold and windy -- a sprinter's worst nightmare. Anyway, apart from the weather, the people are extremely friendly and helpful. It is a beautiful get-away spot, however, it is too far away and too long of a trip.
What do you plan to do when you are not practicing or competing?
Since I arrived, I have only been concerned about getting well. By the time I am well again I will not have time to go sight seeing which was my original plan. It will be time for the showdown. Oh well, that's life. I will focus on training and getting healthy again so that I can kick some butt.
