Counting down the days
U.S. diver Michelle Davison is competing in her first Olympics Games. Davison was the 1998 Southeastern Conference champion on the 1- and 3-meter springboards. The 20-year-old will compete on the springboard in Sydney.
September 15, 2000
How do you like Australia? It's great to back in Australia. I was in Sydney for the World Championships in 1998. The people are so friendly here. The biggest difference from 1998 to 2000 is the Olympic rings. They are everywhere and so is the Olympic spirit. What has your schedule been like? In my free time I walk around the Village and see and meet the most fascinating people. I have been able to get down to Sydney to see the Opera House; the Bridge, which is very cool because the Olympic rings are suspended from cables; and Darling Harbour. Our training varies from day to day. But we normally have two workouts a day (evening and morning) along with light weights and abdominal work. We have already started to taper, which is nice. We are very fortunate to be able to train in the same pool we will compete in. But now that the Opening Ceremonies are over, we are heading for Melbourne Sept. 16-19 to ensure ample pool time while the swimming takes place through the 23rd. It is also a way for us to get out of the chaos and gather our thoughts. We are counting down the days until we dive! I am competing on the 3m board. I start on Sept. 27. A number of my family members are here including my parents so it exciting to have them in the stands when I dive. I saw the Gamecocks have won two games -- keep it up! To all the people in Columbia and Irmo -- thanks for your support and make sure you watch the Games on TV! I can't wait to come back and tell you all about it in person.
