American hurdler Terrence Trammell

American Terrence Trammell, who won five NCAA title at the University of South Carolina, won the silver medal Monday in the 110-meter hurdles. Running a personal best time of 13.16 seconds, Trammell placed second to Cuba's Anier Garcia. CNNSI.com asked Trammell about the race.

It hasn't sunk in yet. It will happen before this trip is over or when I get back home. This was what everything was about, getting to this point here. All the hard work and sacrifices. It paid off. In the finals I came out more focused than I was in the first round because as each round progressed, the focus got a little more intense. I was real energetic. When I first came out I was jumping around. I was ready for the final.

My start would have been a lot faster if the first start hadn't been a false start. I told myself to keep my composure. Because I thought the next one was going to be live. When the gun sounded I was a little hesitate because I didn't know it if it would be the real thing, but everybody kept going so I did too. By hurdle No. 5 I noticed I was out of medal contention. I wanted to really focus and dig deep and I was able to do it. I made everything a bit quicker and was more aggressive to the hurdles.

Getting up on the medal stand I was just happy. No tears came out. I thought they might, but maybe that's something gold medalists get to experience. But I am glad I was able to get up on the podium. Everyone strives to the best, and it's thrill to get the silver.

It was a shocker that Allen Johnson (training partner at USC) wasn't up there. I didn't know what to say to him afterwards because he's always up there. It was kind of hard, I didn't know how to respond. So many times it has been the other way around. I didn't know how he wanted to handle it, but I respected him enough to give him his space. If anyone was deserving of a medal it was surely him because of everything he has been through with injuries and the media.

The Gamecock football team is amazing. Right now the way the Gamecocks are playing some serious ball. I am not trying to ride the bandwagon, but I called it last year. They are going to surprise a lot of people. They have already done that. I am truly happy for them. I know the pain and embarrassment they went though on campus. It's still up in the air if I will play football next year. I have to weigh my options. I wish I could have been there to help tear down the goal posts. I might have to jumped on the goal posts but run off before the cops try to catch me.

I love this medal.
