More bad results Agency finds 10 athletes using banned substancesCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency reported Monday that 10 athletes were caught using banned substances from April through June. The agency tested 1,600 athletes in 41 sports during that time and found 25 athletes using restricted substances. Fifteen athletes had permission to use them, and those cases were thrown out, the agency said. Of the 10 who were not supposed to be using the substances, two cases involved the use of the stimulants amphetamine and ephedrine and three cases involved the anabolic steroids testosterone and epitestosterone, USADA spokesman Rich Wanninger said. Three international athletes tested positive for stimulants, steroids and narcotics, and the USADA referred the results to international federations. Under an agreement, three U.S. athletes who tested positive for a stimulant and steroids by an international federation were turned over to the USADA. Diver Matt Bricker from Winter Park, Fla., tested positive for ephedrine and has finished a two-month suspension, the agency said. Action on another case was still pending. The agency will decide whether the athletes should be sanctioned. Only those who are sanctioned will be identified. About 144 athletes tested were given less than 24 hours notice. The number of tests performed increased by 47 percent over the first four months of the year, when the agency performed 1,112 tests in 30 sports. The USADA operates as an independent agency funded by the federal government.
