LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) -- Juan Antonio Samaranch, the former president of the International Olympic Committee, remains hospitalized but is getting better, the IOC said Monday.

"He is feeling much better," said an IOC spokeswoman, who declined to be named.

"His condition is improving but he is still in hospital because the doctors want him to rest a little bit more."

Samaranch was taken to a hospital in Lausanne on Tuesday night -- his 81st birthday -- shortly after returning from an IOC meeting in Moscow. The IOC said he was suffering from "extreme fatigue."

The meeting saw the end of Samaranch's 21-year term as IOC president. Belgian Jacques Rogge was elected to replace him and Samaranch was appointed IOC honorary life president.

Samaranch was unable to attend Friday's ceremony in Lausanne when Rogge officially took over as the organization's president.
