Carlsten challenges positive drug test Posted: Thursday June 27, 2002 12:18 AMCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- Javelin thrower Emily Carlsten has challenged a positive drug test and has been given a provisional suspension pending an arbitration hearing, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said Wednesday. The agency said Carlsten, 23, of Gainesville, Fla., tested positive for an amphetamine at the Penn Relays on April 26. An arbitration panel will determine the validity of Carlsten's test result. If the result is upheld, the panel would decide the length of any suspension. The average suspension for a positive test is about two years, agency spokesman Rich Wanninger said. No date was set for the hearing. If the test is upheld, Carlsten's suspension will be retroactive to June 3. The Anti-Doping Agency is an independent, federally funded group that oversees drug testing and discipline for U.S. Olympic athletes.
