SLOC presents final report to IOC Posted: Tuesday November 26, 2002 3:42 PM
MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Nine months after staging an Olympics that produced a $100 million surplus, organizers of the Salt Lake City Games presented their final report Tuesday to the IOC executive board. Fraser Bullock, who served as chief financial officer of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, was accompanied by Scott Givens, SLOC's creative director. Mitt Romney, who headed the organizing committee, spoke to the board by video conference from Boston, where he is preparing to take office as Massachusetts governor. Bullock, who replaced Romney as SLOC chief when he left to run for office, said the Salt Lake officials were thanked after the 20-minute presentation. "It brings a sense of closure, and at the same time, we know we're not going to be working with them again in the future," he said. "We made a lot of deep friendships." Romney and Bullock took over at SLOC after the Salt Lake bidding scandal, which led to the resignation or expulsion of 10 IOC members. Bullock said Romney noted in his remarks that the scandal "helped refocus our efforts on the athletes and got us back to basics." Bullock said Romney planned to present the report in person to the full IOC general assembly in July in Prague, Czech Republic. IOC vice president Kevan Gosper praised SLOC's "highly stimulating" report. "There was nothing to question," he said. "It was a presentation of excellence. There was a deep feeling of satisfaction that the games came out so well." Gosper said the games had "erased" all memories of the strained relations between SLOC and the IOC after the scandal.
