Study predicts Paris will get Games Posted: Sunday December 22, 2002 1:55 PMLONDON (AP) -- A study by Britain's top sports body predicts Paris will win the right to host the 2012 Olympics. The Observer newspaper reported Sunday that UK Sport's report dampened Prime Minister Tony Blair's enthusiasm for a campaign to land the event. But a Blair spokesman said he hasn't expressed those views. The analysis, done by John Scott of UK Sport, said the International Olympic Committee probably would choose Paris because it has a suitable stadium, an excellent transportation system and a recent history of staging major events like the 1998 World Cup. The Observer said Blair and his cabinet members were told that a campaign to land the games "would cost too much and lead to endless negative headlines." New York also is competing to host the games, and other rivals are expected to include Toronto, Rio de Janeiro, Moscow, Istanbul and Budapest. The winner will be announced in July 2005. Also, Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Sunday said his country was ready to bid for the games. India hasn't won an Olympic gold medal in two decades, but he said "I am confident things will change."
