VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- Chris Rudge, a former professional lacrosse player and publishing executive, was hired Friday as the new chief executive of the Canadian Olympic Committee.

He filled the position left vacant by the death of Jim Thompson from a heart attack in August.

Rudge takes over the COC as Vancouver is competing to host the 2010 Winter Games against Salzburg, Austria, and Pyeongchang, South Korea. The International Olympic Committee is scheduled to announce its selection in July.

Before that, Vancouver residents will vote Feb. 22 on whether the city should host the games.

"That clearly is a community issue and from everything that I hear the community is very strongly behind the bid," Rudge said.

Officials from the three candidate cities have submitted their bid books at IOC headquarters in Switzerland. Vancouver and Salzburg are considered the co-favorites.
