Stark blow to British gold bid
SYDNEY, Sept 19 (AFP) - Great Britain's hopes of catching leaders Australia in the three-day event were hit Tuesday with the news that they would be without Ian Stark in the show jumping finale. Scottish rider Stark, a silver medallist in 1984 (Los Angeles) and in both the team and individual disciplines in the 1988 Seoul Games, revealed that his mount Jaybee was sore after Monday's cross-country section. British team manager Matt Straker said: "We're very upset for Ian and in particular for Jaybee." Yogi Breisner, the chef d'equipe, believed gold was still up for grabs: "We still have three riders in the showjumping and our chances for a medal are still extremely strong." The Aussies led Britain by 12.8 penalties and New Zealand by 37 after the cross-country section.
