Falls and injuries in equestrian cross-country
SYDNEY, Sept 21 (AFP) - Five riders had falls and several horses were injured on the cross country course in the Olympic individual three-day event on Thursday. Belgian's Bruno Goyens de Heusch, Sweden's Sofia Andler, Canada's Bruce Mandeville, Denmark's Nils Haagensen and Brazil's Roberto Macedo all suffered tumbles. Macedo's horse Fricote landed on him and equestrian officials said he had a suspected pelvis injury. He was taken by ambulance to a Sydney Hospital in a satisfactory condition. The first three riders are not believed to have suffered any major injuries but Denmark's Nils Haagensen was seen hobbling along with Olympic officials. In other incidents, Bermuda's Mary Jane Tumbridge's horse Bermuda's Gold broke down with a fractured leg after going over a jump while German Kai Rueder withdrew after his mount refused to jump.
