SYDNEY, Sept 23 (AFP) - The United States broke the world record in the women's 4x100m medley relay Olympic final here Saturday, winning gold in 3min 58.30sec.

The team of B.J. Bedford, Megan Quann, Jenny Thompson and Dara Torres crushed the previous record of 4:01.67 set by China at the 1994 World Championships in Rome.

Silver medallists Australia also finished inside the old mark, in 4:01.59.
