Turk weightlifter accused of "selling out" Turkey for foreign bribe
ANKARA, Sept 24 (AFP) - Turkish officials accused national weightlifter Sunay Bulut of a deliberate disqualification from the Olympic Games Sunday in return for money from a foreign country, Anatolia news agency reported. Bulut was barred from competing in the 94kg division after turning out to be 500 grams overweight. "Sunay Bulut betrayed us. It is impossibe for somebody in this division to have weight problems. We have suspicions that he took money from some other countries," the president of the Turkish weightlifting federation, Savas Agaoglu, told Anatolia in Sydney. "He will have to pay a very heavy bill for his behaviour. And it is impossible for him to do weightlifting within Turkish territory from now on," he added. Anatolia described the incident as a "scandal" and said the Turkish weightlifting team was in a shock. The Bulgarian-born Bulut became European champion in 1997. He has also won several other medals from European and other major international competitions, including a bronze from the 1994 world championship. He has stayed away from weightlifting since 1997 due to a doping ban and injuries.
