Collection fund launched for banned Romanian gymnast
BUCHAREST, Sept 26 (AFP) - The Romanian Olympic Committee (COR) vice-president Cristian Gatu announced Tuesday that a collection fund had been set up for gymnast Andreea Raducan who was stripped of her all around gold medal after testing positive for a banned substance. Raducan was disqualified and lost her medal Tuesday after testing positive for the use of banned stimulant pseudo-ephedrine. "The lethargic attitude of those parties involved in the verification of banned substances by gymnasts have tarnished the efforts of a young girl and the entire Olympic family," Gatu said in a press release. "I call upon all those people who love the sport to join our COR foundation in order to compensate this athlete's financial losses that were stolen from her," he added. Romania's Sports minister had promised 15,000 dollars to each athlete that won gold, but Raducan's positive test had deprived her of this reward. But late Tuesday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport issued a statement saying Raducan planned to appeal against the decision. The sports tribunal will hold a special three-member hearing at its Sydney office Wednesday, the body said. She failed the test after Romania's team physician Ioachim Oana gave her two over-the-counter cold remedy tablets.
