Lopez wins taekwondo gold for US
SYDNEY, Sept 28 (AFP) - Steven Lopez, the 1998 World Cup winner, narrowly beat South Korea's Sin Joon-Sik in the men's taekwondo 68kg featherweight final Thursday. The 21-year-old Lopez, who also won the Pan American title in 1998 and 1999, was down 0-1 after the first round, but the deficit was ereased when Sin was deducted one point after being warned for passivity in the second and third rounds. Lopez scored a point with a kick halfway through the third and final round which carried him to the top of the Olympic podium. Sin, a 20-year-old student at Kyunghee University, had earlier upset world champion Hadi Saeibonehkohal of Iran 5-3 in the semi-finals. Saeibonehkohal, a three-times World Cup winner, came through to consolation round to win the bronze medal, beating Austria's Tuncay Caliskan 4-2.
