Double salvo boosts Spanish hopes
SYDNEY, Sept 30 (AFP) - Spain seized the early initiative in the final of the Olympic men's soccer tournament against Cameroon here Saturday, taking a 2-0 lead into the half-time interval. The 1992 gold medallists made the perfect start opening the scoring in the 2nd minute. Tamudo was fouled on the edge of the penalty area and Xavi stepped up to curl the ball into the net with 16-year-old Cameroon goalkeeper Idriss Carlos Kameni rooted to his line. The Africans were clearly nervous and Spanish striker Jose Mari had his ankles clipped inside the box by Aaron Nguimbat in the fifth minute. But Angulo spurned a glorious opportunity to double the lead as his tame spot-kick was saved easily enough by Kameni, low to his right. Spanish captain Toni Velamazan was forced out of the game with a shoulder injury in the 23rd minute. The closest Cameroon came to an equaliser was Patrick Mboma's header wide, despite the enthusiastic backing of the vast majority of the crowd. And substitute Gabri made it two for Spain with the last touch of the half, running onto a header and firing past Kameni.
