Johnson is the first American woman with an S1 ranking to swim her events at a national level. She started swimming with the local United Cerebral Palsy program (UCP) in 1994. Johnson first swam at the national level at the UCP Nationals in 1995. She trained with coach Don Watkinds and the UCP-sponsored San Diego Bullets Swim Team until 1998, and now swims for Watkinds Peninsula Aquatics Swim Team.

Since joining Watkinds' program, Johnson has swum without flotation aids. She holds American records in the 50-meter backstroke, 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke, 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter backstroke; and world records in the 100-meter backstroke, 200-meter backstroke.
