Bio

Steve acquired his disability when he contracted Guillain-Barre Syndrome, an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves (those outside the brain and spinal cord), after a severe case of food poisoning in 1984. Pate has participated in wheelchair rugby for the past decade, with the Santa Barbara Breakers, Reno Crush, Sacramento Spokebusters, Berkeley Quadzilla, Spokane Dukes, Seattle AllNight and Texas Stampede. He was a member of the gold-medal squad at the 1999 World Wheelchair Games in New Zealand. He also captured third place at the Nationals this past season, before being selected to represent the U.S. in Sydney this year.

After completing his education at Santa Barbara City College, Pate transferred to California State University, Chico, wher he majored in recreation administration/therapeutic recreation. At Chico, Pate developed an adaptive rock climbing program and led several adaptive rafting, canoeing and hiking trips. Pate completed his recreation therapy internship in Spokane, Wash., before returning to his hometown to train for the Paralympics.
